CCTV (closed-circuit television) is a TV system in which signals are not publicly distributed but are monitored, primarily for surveillance and security purposes. CCTV relies on strategic placement of cameras, and observation of the camera’s input on monitors somewhere. The most common use of CCTV is in security camera systems. They’ve been found for years in areas like large retail shops, banks, and government institutions. Thanks to reduced costs in the manufacture of cameras and video recording equipment, camera systems are becoming more and more commonplace in smaller businesses, and even private homes.

Types of CCTV Cameras

Dome Camera

The dome camera is one most commonly used for indoor security and surveillance. The shape of the camera makes it difficult for onlookers to tell which way the camera is facing, which is a strong piece of design, deterring criminals by creating an air of uncertainty.

Bullet Camera

A bullet CCTV camera is a wall-mount or ceiling-mounted unit that is typically designed for indoor use, but can also be used for some outdoor applications. Many bullet cameras can also be waterproof by being installed inside protective casings, which protect against dust, dirt, rain, hail and other harmful elements.

IT Camera

IT Cameras are subset of Bullet cameras in which desired lenses are used to target long distances. These are generally called IT1, IT2, IT3.. based on the size of lens used in it. For ex, 6 mm lense is used in IT1 cameras to target 30 mtrs distance instead of regular 3.6 mm lens, 20 mtrs distance. These can also be varifocal to adjust the focal length instead of fixed lenses.

IP Network Camera

These cameras, both hardwired and wireless, transmit images over the Internet, often compressing the bandwidth so as not to overwhelm the web. IP cameras are easier to install than analog cameras because they do not require a separate cable run or power boost to send images over a longer distance.

Cube Camera

These are IP cameras suitable for any indoor applications with their elegant and compact design, having a wide range of H.264 and H.265 camera options for various lighting and installation conditions. For instance, with Extreme WDR technology, most of the models ensure clear image for locations with large variations in light intensity. They can even capture color details in a dim room using Superior Low Light Sensitivity technology. Additionally, they have built-in microphone for two way audio communication & also support memory card for internal recording.

Box Camera

Box cameras have detachable lenses to fit different applications. Standard, also called Varifocal Cameras. CCTV camera lenses can only cover distances of between 35 and 40ft, therefore with Box CCTV cameras, it is possible to use special lenses, which can cover distances greater than 40ft. Desired lenses can be used to use with variable focal lengths. These lenses are available in 3.6mm, 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, and 15mm depending on the target focal distance.

PTZ Camera

PTZ – Pan/tilt/zoom – cameras allow the camera to be moved left or right (panning), up and down (tilting) and even allow the lens to be zoomed closer or farther. These are programmable. These cameras are used in situations where a live guard or surveillance specialist is there operating the security systems or is programmed to operate on its own. These are available in both HD Analog and IP types with different speeds of operation - 10x, 15x, 25x, etc and different target zooms- 100mtrs, 150mtrs, etc.

Panoramic Camera

The Panoramic camera is a single camera which allows you to record everything with a 360 degree panoramic view. These are also called 360 / Fish Eye Cameras. The strength of this camera can reduce the quantity of cameras needed to cover the same surveillance area but acts as 3 different cameras. These cameras have inbuilt Microphone to record voice and 2 way communication.

DVR (Digital Video Recorder)

A DVR is an innovative gadget that transforms the analog signals from a CCTV or Closed Circuit Television Camera into digital format, keeps or maintains the information in a hard drive and transmits live video stream to the Display units (Monitor or TV).

A Closed Circuit Camera, which has a DVR is not completely analog. The CCTV transmits the video signal in an analog format and the connected DVR transmits the received signals to the digital format prior to recording and sending over the respective network.

DVR

NVR (Network Video Recorder)

An NVR is a digital device that transforms the network signals from a CCTV or Closed Circuit Television Camera into digital format, keeps or maintains the information in a hard drive and transmits live video stream to the Display units (Monitor or TV). An NVR contains no dedicated video capture hardware. However, the software is typically run on a dedicated device, usually with an embedded operating system.

Network video recorders are distinct from digital video recorders (DVR) as their input is from a network rather than a direct connection to a video capture card or tuner. Video on a DVR is encoded and processed at the DVR, while video on an NVR is encoded and processed at the camera, then streamed to the NVR for storage or remote viewing. Additional processing may be done at the NVR, such as further compression or tagging with meta data.

NVR

DVR / NVR Resolutions

A DVR normally supports HD-TVI, AHD, CVBS, and HD-CVI technologies. The quality of video varies in each technology. Also, the DVRs are available in different resolutions. For instance, 720p resolution initiates from the quantity of pixels in the image, which is 1280 x 720 vertically and horizontally respectively. If you increase these pixels, you will get a complete 921,600 pixels that is equal to 0.9 Mega pixels. And 1080p resolution initiates from the quantity of pixels in the image, which is 1920 x 1080 horizontally and vertically respectively. If you multiply all these pixels, you will get 2,073,600 pixels, which is equal to 2 Mega pixels.

DVR / NVR Factors

There are certain important factors, which are needed to be considered while choosing a DVR/NVR like

  1. No. of Supported channels
  2. Maximum Resolution, 2 MP, 5MP,etc
  3. Maximum supported Hard Disk, 2 TB, 4 TB,etc
  4. Supported types of Outputs like HDMI, VGA, Video
  5. Online Mobile App, Client Software, etc

Biometric Devices

Biometric Devices
A biometric device is a security identification and authentication device. Such devices use automated methods of verifying or recognising the identity of a living person based on a physiological or behavioral characteristic. These characteristics include fingerprints, facial images, iris and voice recognition. Being used for Identification, these devices are more commonly used for attendance system to maintain transparency. Biometric devices, by integrating with Electro Magnetic (EM) door locks, can also control door access and restrict entry of people.
